Statement of intent
Deliverable(s): Final outcome, format, software, technical details
For my final outcome, I intend to create a prototyped interaction for a walking app that supports users in transitioning comfortably from the outdoors to the digital world. The prototype will be built in Figma, and focused on calm, and minimal interactions. The deliverable will be a click-through prototype, approximately 1–2 minutes long, showing the user journey from onboarding to post-walk reflection.
Project theme: How does your work respond to the question: “What is Work in the Digital World?”
My project explores the idea that “work in a digital world” often involves creating comfortable, human-centred experiences in digital spaces. As a UX/UI designer, I see my role as helping users feel supported and in control, especially in moments when they shift between physical and digital environments. This app prototype is designed to reduce digital overload and make re-engagement with the device feel soothing and intuitive.
Visual styles: Research, design, typography, and inspiration
The visual style will take inspiration from wellness and accessibility-focused design. I will use soft pastel colour palettes, gentle transitions, rounded UI elements, and clear sans-serif typography to create a sense of comfort. Influences include the visual language of Calm, Headspace, and visualisations from W.E.B. Du Bois, whose use of clean structure and balance inspire a sense of clarity and calm. I will also reference mobile UI trends that prioritise minimalism, softness, and ease of interaction.
Content: Core information and source material
The conceptual framework for the project draws from the following texts:
William Rankin’s Geo-Epistemology — for ideas about how we perceive and interact with environments differently depending on how information is framed.
Ruha Benjamin’s Automating Anti-Blackness — for its critique of default systems and how technology must be intentionally designed to avoid replicating harm.
W.E.B. Du Bois’s Data Portraits — as a model for how visual clarity and aesthetic care can communicate complex social information in a deeply human way.
